About the Excursion

Very rarely do we get to go on adventures when we’re head down building companies or pursuing a creative journey.

And even more rarely do we get to do that with other curated people who understand it as well as you do.

As we continue to create experiences for people in these fields, this retreat split between 25 founders and creatives on the Tunisian coast and the Sahara. Half of it more heads-down, half of it out in a country most people have never seriously considered visiting.

We’ve been running retreats for two years. Last winter it was the Austrian Alps where thirty of us went skiing the Pitztal and worked out of a hotel we’d taken over completely. This is the warm-weather version, and in a lot of ways the more interesting one. Tunis has some of the best-preserved Roman sites in the Mediterranean, a medina that’s been continuously lived in since the 7th century, and the Sahara about five hours south of the airport.

The week

Days 1–4, La Marsa.

We take over a hotel on the coast just north of Carthage and use it as a basecamp. Mornings are for working and hanging out, with some small programming. Then we’ll go out: the medina one day, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd the next, a full day on the water after that.

Days 5–7, the south.

We drive out of Tunis early and don’t come back for three days. Mountain oases, a Star Wars set still standing in the desert, and a night sleeping in the dunes with nomadic hosts. No laptops or wifi allowed. Day seven is the road back to Tunis and flights home.

Where you’ll stay

Golden Carthage Hotel & Résidence, in La Marsa — a seafront town at the top of the Carthage coast, ten minutes from Sidi Bou Saïd and about twenty from the airport, with the promenade and the beach in walking distance.

We’re taking a mix of the residence apartments and the hotel rooms. Every unit has a balcony. Breakfast is included, there’s daily housekeeping and 24-hour room service, two pools, three restaurants, and a gym.

In the south you’re in a beautiful hotel at Diar Abou Habibi, a lodge built inside a palm grove outside Tozeur.

The last night there’s no hotel at all. Tents, bedrolls, and open sky in the Grand Erg Oriental.

Who’s coming

Twenty to twenty-five people, all hand-picked. Mostly founders, idea through series b, plus a handful of creatives, writers, and people who are hard to categorize but who you’ll be glad are there.

We’ve hosted 350+ events and 15+ retreats over the past two years, and curation is the thing we’ve spent the most time on. For us, 25 is perfect number for this kind of retreat.

Open to Verci members and to everyone else by application.

Eating

Breakfast is at the hotel every morning. Lunches and dinners will move around.

The first night is at Dar Zarrouk in Sidi Bou Saïd, on a terrace above the sea. One night we eat in La Goulette, the old port town where the cooking is Sicilian and Tunisian and Jewish all at once. Another at Le Golfe. On the water day, lunch is either set up on a beach you can only reach by boat or served on board.

In the south we will eat at the lodge in the palm grove, and the last dinner is cooked over a fire in the dunes by the people hosting us out there.
